THE BENEFITS OF ADOPTING AN OLDER DOG

TUE, 15 AUG 2017 BY LINDA ROSADO

YOU’RE SAVING A LIFE

Believe it or not, the moment you adopt an older pet from the shelter, you may have effectively saved them from a grim alternative. People are much quicker to adopt younger dogs and puppies than senior dogs, which means seniors are more likely to get the short end of the stick if an adoption center runs into issues with overcrowding.

HIGHER TRAINABILITY

They say you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but it’s actually quite the opposite. Dogs can be trained at nearly any age. Older dogs are considered easier to train, compared to puppies that tend to have shorter attention spans.

POTTY-TRAINING EXPERTS

Barring any medical conditions that can keep dogs from being able to use the bathroom responsibly, older dogs usually come potty trained. This is the biggest hurdle when adopting a younger dog, so because you don’t have toworry about cleaning up their poop with dog waste bags, it can free you up to spend more time playing than picking up poop in all the wrong places.

CALM, COOL AND COLLECTED

In most instances, older dogs are much calmer and less energetic than younger dogs and puppies. This is especially ideal if you aren’t the most energetic person in the world, either. Additionally, older adult dogs are well past the teething phase, which means less destruction to the things you own.

Older dogs also come with a lot more experience, either from living in a previous home or spending a lot of time in shelters, so they tend to cohabitate better with children and other pets.
